This extremely precise portrait of an old man is Francesco Giamberti (1405-1480), a cabinetmaker and builder from Florence. He was in the service of the Medici family. The painter, Piero di Cosimo, has carefully rendered every detail of the man’s face: the sunken mouth, the light-grey stubble, the veins on his temples and his ear which has been folded double under the weight of his hat. Even the undulating Tuscan landscape in the background has been presented in great detail. On the balustrade in front of Giamberti lies a page of sheet music - he composed music for the Medicis on special occasions.
